Pug Information

The Pug is a small dog, but sturdy and strong. Happy and always contented, not in the least temperamental, the Pug is one of the most delightful breeds anyone could wish to own. They have that “special something” and once you’ve had a Pug you’re besotted forever. Admittedly they have no elegance, but their personality shines through and they tend to attract great attention in public. This friendly little dog loves people, is inquisitive and curious without being intrusive, enjoys all the petting and pampering you can give and has plenty of intelligence. Pugs mix well with other dogs and cats – just take care when introducing a new puppy to your resident cat, those lovely large dark eyes are very vulnerable!

The Pug is square, compact and cobby, weighing between 14 and 18lbs (6.4 – 8.2Kg)so doesn’t take up much room or need too much exercise. Providing your Pug can have a daily walk or a good sized garden to run around he will be content. That’s not to say he won’t enjoy a long walk, just that he doesn’t need to have one every day! Most Pugs enjoy their food and are not finicky eaters – take care not to overdo the treats though, so as to avoid the dog becoming too heavy.

Being short haired, Pugs are easy to groom, just a quick brush every day and an occasional bath. Pay attention to the ears, nose wrinkle and eyes to make sure they are clean.

Some Pugs do snore, most will grunt at times in a conversational way as if they are trying to tell you something. As with all short nosed breeds, it makes sense to ensure that they are not over-exerted in hot weather – better keep the walks or stick fetching activities to the cooler parts of the day and let your Pug spend the warm summer days snoozing in the sunshine.

Probably the most famous Pug owners were the late Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Their Pugs were sprayed every day with Christian Dior perfume and wore mink collars. They ate fresh chicken breast, steak or liver served on silver dishes with freshly baked biscuits! While this level of luxury isn’t necessary, your Pug will undoubtedly show you the same loyalty and devotion as the Dukes, whose Pug dog Diamond was with him when he died.
